1. Why did you choose this topic?
The book takes a look at materiality in dance and performance. Until now, the prevailing paradigm in dance research has been that dance is fleeting and ephemeral; performance, on the other hand, is seen as unique, unrepeatable and situational. Following the material turn, we have now focused on the materiality of dance and performance and thus also on its permanence and asked where and how this is manifested. In doing so, we focused on three areas in particular: writing, documenting and archiving.
2. What new perspectives does your book offer?
By focusing on materiality, the book opens up a new perspective on dance and performance. It questions previous certainties, such as the binarity of material and immaterial arts, the credo that dance is an ephemeral art that leaves no traces, or the view that dance is purely a physical art.
3. What makes your topic relevant to current research debates?
Dance is an important part of everyday culture and art. Dance and performance studies also deal with the question of how dance and performance art can become part of cultural memory and how a culture of remembrance can be created through dance. This also touches on questions that are of overall importance in the creation of a cultural memory: What is considered relevant? Is there such a thing as a canon in dance? What role do inclusion and exclusion, a cultural understanding of history or the production conditions of choreographers and performance artists play in the documentation and archiving of their art?
